When it comes to safety, our engineers never stop with their research. Thus, in addition to the one-box concept with its intelligent crumple zone design, the A-Class incorporates many important technologies that make driving even safer and help to prevent accidents. Airbags, crash-responsive head restraints, seat belts and crash-responsive emergency lighting are all part of the passive safety concept. Intelligent systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), the anti-lock braking system (ABS), Brake Assist (BAS) and adaptive brake light help you to better master critical driving situations.

The BlueEFFICIENCY models of the A-Class
There are three BlueEFFICIENCY models available for the A-Class which are equipped with environmentally friendly technologies or extensive special measures: the A 160 BlueEFFICIENCY, A 180 BlueEFFICIENCY and A 160 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY.

Packages of measures in the A-Class
All the E-Class BlueEFFICIENCY models are equipped with a raft of different features according to the type of fuel used and engine fitted. A few examples:
- Intelligent energy management, for example using alternator output control based on current requirements
- Tyres optimised for rolling resistance
- Improved aerodynamics, for example as provided by the closed-interior radiator grille
- optimised ECO start/stop function with new operating logic, which switches the engine off when in neutral to save fuel

A-Class E-CELL
Still to come this year is the market launch in small-series production of the first purely battery-powered electric vehicle from Mercedes-Benz: the A-Class E-CELL does not need any fuel in the conventional sense. Modern rechargeable lithium-ion batteries store the energy required and allow for a range of more than 200 kilometres. As the batteries are located in the sandwich floor of the vehicle, even this version of the A-Class remains a full-fledged 5-seater with unrestricted interior space and effective load space.
